World Wetlands Day is celebrated
World Wetlands Day, observed annually on February 02, is marked today with the aim of raising global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. This year, the United Nations Environment Programme has announced the theme for World Wetlands Day as “It’s Time for Wetlands Restoration”, which highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration.
Several programs had been organized across Sri Lanka coinciding with World Wetlands Day. Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi pointed out the significance of safeguarding the eco systems while catering to the public needs. She expressed this idea at the function held at the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation to mark the World Wetlands Day.
