Yupun Abeykoon qualifies for men’s 100m semi-final

Commonwealth Games: Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon placed first in the Heat No. 06 of the first round of the 100 meters men’s event today at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The Sri Lankan sprinter finished first with a time of 10.06 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals of the men’s 100 meters race which is scheduled to be held tomorrow. Meanwhile, Gayanthika Abeyratne established a Sri Lanka record in the Heat 2 of the 800 meters event with a timing of 2 minutes and point 12 seconds. She came 5th in the race and could not qualify for the semi-finals.

Golf: Chief executive Greg Norman says Tiger Woods turned down in the region of 700 million dollars to 800 million dollars to join the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series. A host of top players have joined the breakaway tour, which Woods said at last month’s Open he disagreed with.

Paralympic: A record 33 Para-sports have submitted applications to be part of the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic programme. The 22 sports in the Paris 2024 programme have applied, along with arm wrestling, climbing, Cerebral Palsy (CP) football, golf, karate, Para-dance sport, power chair football, sailing, surfing, and wheelchair handball.
